CBI Prosecutor Killed in Road Accident on Jammu-Srinagar Highway; Driver Arrested
CBI lawyer Sheikh Adil Nabi died in a highway collision near Banihal; police arrested the Scorpio driver.
A tragic road accident on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway claimed the life of Sheikh Adil Nabi, a 35-year-old advocate recently appointed as a Public Prosecutor with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The incident occurred on Thursday, December 25, 2025, around 3:00 pm near the railway crossing in Banihal, when a speeding Mahindra Scorpio rear-ended the Alto car driven by Nabi as he was traveling towards the Kashmir Valley, reportedly from New Delhi. A video of the collision, showing the high-speed impact that caused Nabi's vehicle to spin out of control, quickly went viral on social media, highlighting concerns over reckless driving on this vital highway.
Nabi, a resident of Bijbehara in south Kashmir's Anantnag district and son of Ghulam Nabi Sheikh, sustained critical injuries in the crash. He was initially rushed to the Sub-District Hospital in Banihal for first aid before being transferred to Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag and later to SKIMS Soura in Srinagar for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning, December 26, 2025. Nabi had been practicing at the District Court in Srinagar and was widely respected in the legal community for his dedication, sharp legal acumen, and humble demeanor.
Police have arrested Mohammad Shafi, the driver of the Mahindra Scorpio (registration JK01BB-2625) involved in the collision. The arrest came swiftly as authorities investigated the circumstances of the high-speed rear-end impact, which some reports describe as a hit-and-run style incident involving rash driving. The Jammu and Kashmir Police, under Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban Arun Gupta, confirmed the details, noting that Nabi had only been appointed to the CBI in Chandigarh about two months earlier after successfully clearing the UPSC examination for the prosecuting officer role.
The death of Sheikh Adil Nabi has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity and his hometown, where he is mourned as a promising talent whose career was just beginning at the national level. Colleagues and community members have expressed profound grief over the loss of a dedicated professional known for his commitment to justice. The incident also underscores ongoing safety challenges on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, a key route prone to accidents due to heavy traffic, challenging terrain, and instances of speeding. Investigations into the exact cause continue, with officials emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules to prevent such tragedies.
