CBI Chargesheet Reconstructs Twisha Sharma’s Final 90 Minutes Before Her Death

CBI chargesheet details Twisha Sharma’s final moments.

At 9:36 pm on May 12, 34-year-old Twisha Sharma sent a WhatsApp message to her sister-in-law that would become one of the most significant pieces of evidence in the investigation into her death. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) 30-page chargesheet filed on August 14, Twisha wrote: "Ask him to collect leftover of his wife. But tomorrow. Let me die in peace right now." The message was sent shortly before she was seen on CCTV footage walking towards the terrace of her Bhopal home.

Four minutes after sending the message, at around 9:40 pm, CCTV footage cited in the chargesheet showed Twisha walking upstairs alone from the ground floor towards the terrace. The sequence forms part of an unusually detailed reconstruction of the final moments of her life by investigators. The CBI has relied on digital communications, CCTV footage and accounts of conversations with family members to establish the events leading up to her death.

At 9:41 pm, according to the chargesheet, Twisha called her father. She was crying during the conversation and allegedly told him that her husband, Samarth Singh, had become "very aggressive and violent". She also told her father that she was scared and asked her parents to come to her as soon as possible. Around 10:05 pm, she called her mother and allegedly repeated her concerns about Samarth's behaviour. The call was disconnected shortly afterwards, according to the account presented by investigators.

The sequence continued over the next few minutes. At approximately 10:23 pm, CCTV footage allegedly showed Samarth Singh and his mother, Giribala Singh, going towards the terrace. Investigators have included the footage as part of their reconstruction of what happened at the house that night. Twisha was subsequently brought downstairs and taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal. She was declared brought dead at approximately 10:55 pm, bringing an end to a sequence of events that had begun less than 90 minutes earlier.

The CBI chargesheet, filed on August 14, accuses Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh of subjecting Twisha to sustained mental cruelty and abetting her suicide. Giribala Singh is described as a retired principal and district judge. The allegations contained in the chargesheet are part of the prosecution's case and will be tested during the judicial proceedings. The investigators' reconstruction seeks to establish both the circumstances surrounding Twisha's death and the events that preceded it.

The minute-by-minute account has brought renewed attention to the final communications between Twisha and her family and the CCTV evidence collected from the house. Her message to her sister-in-law, calls to her parents and movements captured by surveillance cameras now form key elements of the CBI's account of the night. The chargesheet alleges that these events occurred against a background of sustained mental cruelty, while the accused will have the opportunity to contest the allegations through the legal process.
