Catastrophic Silo Collapse at Dhanbad Coal Washery; Worker Rescued

100-foot coal silo collapses in Dhanbad; one worker rescued.

A 100-foot-tall silo used for storing bulk materials collapsed late Friday night at the Madhuban washery in Bharat Coking Coal Limited’s (BCCL) Block-2 area in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district, under Baghmara police station limits. The sudden collapse trapped one worker, who was safely rescued on Saturday, according to Baghmara Sub-Divisional Police Officer Purushottam Kumar Singh.

Baghmara MLA Shatrughan Mahato, who inspected the site, explained that the facility housed three silos, with the collapsed structure serving as the entrance to the others. The worker, employed in the third silo, was trapped in the debris but was successfully extracted by rescue teams. Mahato noted that the silos, constructed six to seven years ago, are operated by an outsourced company, raising questions about maintenance and oversight.

BCCL officials have announced a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse, which has sparked concerns about the safety and structural integrity of industrial facilities in the region. The incident underscores the urgent need for stringent safety protocols to protect workers and prevent future disasters.
