A 12-year-old girl was found dead in Budgam on Sunday, prompting widespread outrage, protests, and the launch of a high-level police investigation. Authorities said the body was recovered from fields located around 200 metres from her residence in Galwanpora village, a day after she was reported missing.
Police said the minor had left home on Saturday evening to attend a religious class but did not return. A search operation was initiated by family members and local residents, and the body was discovered early Sunday morning. Senior officials confirmed that initial findings point to a serious criminal offence, and a detailed investigation is underway.
Senior Superintendent of Police Hariprasad KK said all medico-legal formalities have been completed and that investigators are treating the case with utmost priority. He added that multiple angles are being examined to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to ensure a comprehensive probe.

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified information, warning that speculation on social media could disrupt the investigation and cause distress to the victim’s family. Police also assured that the inquiry would be conducted in a fair and transparent manner, with strict action against those responsible.
The incident has sparked strong reactions across the region, with residents describing it as deeply disturbing and demanding swift justice. Local community members staged protests, calling for the immediate identification and arrest of those involved. The case has also intensified concerns over child safety and security in the region.
Political leaders, including members of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, have condemned the incident. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief, calling the incident “shocking and deeply distressing,” and assured full government support to the investigation along with strict punishment for those found guilty under the law.
