BTech Student’s Suicide Highlights Academic Pressure
BTech student at Sharda University dies by suicide, citing academic pressure in a note.
A second-year BTech student at Sharda University in Greater Noida was found dead in his hostel room on Friday night, having allegedly taken his own life by hanging, police reported. The student, identified as 24-year-old Shivam Dey from Purnia, Bihar, left a suicide note stating that no one was responsible for his death and requested the university to refund his fees to his parents, citing overwhelming academic pressure as a contributing factor.
Shivam, enrolled in the BTech Computer Science program since 2022, struggled academically in his second year, failing to meet the minimum 5.0 CGPA required to advance to the third year, according to a Sharda University spokesperson. Despite efforts by his mentor to provide support through encouragement, internship opportunities, and academic programs, Shivam faced challenges in improving his performance. The university offered him the option to repeat his second year at reduced fees, but the pressure appeared to have taken a toll.
Hailing from Madhubani, Bihar, Shivam was the only son of his parents. His father, Kartik Dey, who works for a private company, and his mother, a housewife, noted that Shivam had seemed normal during a recent family trip to Vaishno Devi, showing no visible signs of distress before returning to college on August 2.

The Knowledge Park police were alerted on August 15 by a private hospital about the incident at HRM Hostel. The body was sent for a post-mortem, and a case has been registered as investigations continue. Sharda University expressed its condolences to Shivam’s family, committing to refund the fees and provide all necessary support during this difficult time.
This incident marks the second such tragedy at Sharda University in recent weeks. On July 18, a second-year Dental Sciences student also died by suicide in her hostel room, accusing two faculty members of contributing to her distress. The faculty members were subsequently arrested.
The recurring incidents have raised concerns about the mental health and academic pressures faced by students, underscoring the need for enhanced support systems within educational institutions.
