#BreakingNews: Two Arrested as Odisha Police Crack Interstate Illegal Arms Racket

Decoy operation nets two suspects with illegal firearms.

The Special Crime Unit of the Commissionerate Police orchestrated a sophisticated decoy operation that effectively dismantled a significant interstate illegal arms trafficking ring, leading to the apprehension of two Bihar natives and the recovery of a substantial arsenal. The seized items included a carbine fitted with two magazines, five semi-automatic pistols, and nine live rounds of ammunition, marking a critical blow to underground weapon proliferation networks operating across state borders.

Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh briefed journalists on the operation's success, revealing that actionable intelligence had pinpointed Divyanshu Kumar and Chandan Kumar, both 26-year-old inhabitants of Khagaria district in Bihar, as key players in the illicit arms market within Odisha. To neutralize the threat without alerting the suspects, undercover operatives meticulously impersonated potential arms purchasers, engaging in negotiations to build trust and secure a meeting point for the exchange.

Lured by the prospect of a lucrative deal, the accused traveled to the city and were strategically ambushed near Malisahi late on Friday night, with the contraband in their immediate possession. The agreed-upon transaction involved Rs 1 lakh for the carbine and Rs 50,000 for each semi-automatic pistol, with forensic tracing confirming that the firearms originated from Munger in Bihar, a region notorious for its clandestine gun-manufacturing activities that supply criminal elements nationwide.

Investigative findings indicate that the pair had established a pattern of supplying illegal weapons to various locations throughout Odisha, encompassing urban centers such as Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, as well as rural areas including Jagatsinghpur and Khurda districts. Authorities are rigorously cross-verifying records of these alleged prior dealings to construct a comprehensive timeline of their activities and potentially uncover linkages to larger syndicates involved in similar enterprises.

The probe continues with intensified efforts to unravel the intricate supply chain, identify financial patrons sustaining the operation, and fully eradicate the extensive criminal infrastructure supporting this arms racket. Commissioner Singh underscored the operation's role as a landmark accomplishment in the sustained campaign to suppress unauthorized arms circulation, thereby enhancing public safety and law enforcement efficacy in the region.
