80-year-old man dies after alleged assault by TMC councillor over protest against illegal construction in West Bengal.
An 80-year-old man, Tulsi Adhikari, died in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district after allegedly being assaulted by a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor for protesting illegal construction near his home. The incident occurred in the Barrackpore area and has triggered outrage across the poll-bound state.
According to the family, Tulsi Adhikari had been actively protesting against unauthorized construction in front of his house and had filed a formal complaint regarding the matter. On Sunday, the TMC councillor, Rabindra Nath Bhattacharya of North Barrackpore Municipality’s Ward No. 23, allegedly entered the Adhikari residence with associates and assaulted the elderly man.
Paromita Adhikari, daughter-in-law of the deceased, alleged that the councillor abused Tulsi and kicked him in the abdomen, causing him to collapse. Tulsi was rushed to Chandra Bose Hospital in Barrackpore Cantonment, where he was declared dead on arrival. The family has lodged a police complaint against the councillor, prompting his arrest.

Before his arrest, Rabindra Nath Bhattacharya denied the allegations, claiming they were politically motivated. “I did not assault anyone. The son of the deceased grabbed my neck and pushed me. CCTV footage will confirm the truth,” the councillor stated. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.
Authorities are investigating the incident, examining eyewitness accounts, and reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Local residents expressed shock over the attack on an elderly man and called for swift justice, highlighting growing concerns over political violence in the region.
The incident has sparked discussions on the safety of citizens protesting illegal activities, with civil society groups urging the government to ensure strict action against public representatives involved in violent acts.
