Bolsonaro's Secret Plan to Flee Brazil for Argentina

Former president's asylum plot uncovered by police.

Brazil's federal police have uncovered shocking messages on former President Jair Bolsonaro's phone, revealing his plan to flee to Argentina and seek political asylum. According to a 170-page police report reviewed by the Associated Press, Bolsonaro drafted a letter to Argentine President Javier Milei on Feb 10, 2024, requesting urgent asylum, claiming political persecution in Brazil and fear for his life.

The revelation comes as Bolsonaro awaits a Supreme Court ruling on an alleged coup attempt. On Wednesday, police formally accused him and his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, of obstruction of justice in connection with his pending trial. The police report details Bolsonaro's disregard for house arrest measures and his efforts to undermine Brazilian democratic institutions, including the Supreme Court and Congress.

The report also notes Bolsonaro's brief stay at the Hungarian Embassy in Brasília on Feb 12, 2024, sparking speculation of an attempt to evade arrest. Meanwhile, messages between Bolsonaro and Eduardo, who has been living in the United States, reveal their strategy to leverage support from former US President Donald Trump to influence Brazilian legal  proceedings. Trump recently imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian exports, citing Bolsonaro's trial as a factor.

In one exchange, Eduardo warned his father about the fragile situation in the US, urging him to act responsibly to avoid prolonged separation. Tensions surfaced in their communications, with Eduardo calling his father “ungrateful” for his efforts to sway the Trump administration. Eduardo, a Brazilian congressman, insisted their conversations were “normal” and accused the investigation of political bias.

The police also targeted Silas Malafaia, a prominent evangelical pastor and Bolsonaro ally, seizing his passport, though he faces no formal charges. As the investigation deepens, Brazil remains gripped by the unfolding drama surrounding its former leader's alleged plans to escape justice.
