BJP, TMC Set For Close Contest In Ballygunge And Rashbehari Seats

BJP, TMC face contest in Kolkata constituencies with Left

The political contest in Kolkata’s upscale Ballygunge and Rashbehari constituencies is expected to be closely watched in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party preparing for a tough battle against the Trinamool Congress (TMC), while the Left Front attempts to regain relevance in the city’s political landscape.

In Rashbehari, the sitting TMC MLA Debasish Kumar is once again facing BJP candidate Swapan Dasgupta in a high-profile rematch, continuing a contest that has become one of the key urban electoral battles in Kolkata. The constituency, long considered a TMC stronghold, saw a relatively comfortable win for the party in the previous election, but the BJP has been steadily increasing its vote share in the area, narrowing margins significantly.

Similarly, in Ballygunge, the electoral dynamics remain competitive as the BJP looks to challenge TMC dominance in one of Kolkata’s most politically symbolic urban seats. The constituency has witnessed frequent candidate reshuffles and shifting voter preferences, making it a key indicator of urban sentiment in the state capital.

Political observers note that both seats have become testing grounds for the BJP’s urban expansion strategy, while the TMC is relying on its organisational strength and welfare-driven narrative to retain control. The closeness of previous contests has added to expectations of another tightly fought election in 2026.

At the same time, the Left Front is attempting a gradual comeback in Kolkata’s urban constituencies, including select pockets where it retains historical influence. While its organisational presence has weakened over the years, the alliance is seeking to reposition itself as an alternative voice amid the TMC-BJP polarisation.

With multi-cornered contests expected across several Kolkata seats, analysts say even small shifts in voter turnout could prove decisive. As campaigning intensifies, Ballygunge and Rashbehari are likely to remain among the most closely tracked constituencies in the state’s electoral map.
