BJP MLA Hurt in Udaipur Highway Crash—4 Detained
BJP MLA Deepti Kiran Maheshwari injured in a highway crash, four detained.
In a dramatic incident on the Udaipur-Rajsamand National Highway, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Deepti Kiran Maheshwari, representing Rajasthan’s Rajsamand constituency, was seriously injured in a car accident around 1 a.m. near Amberi, Udaipur.
The collision occurred when a Gujarat-registered vehicle, traveling from Udaipur toward Nathdwara, made a sudden turn at a road cut near the Chirwa Tunnel, crashing head-on into Maheshwari’s vehicle approaching from Rajsamand. The impact left Maheshwari with rib fractures, and she was rushed to Geetanjali Hospital in Udaipur, where she is currently under intensive care.
Maheshwari’s personal assistant, Jai, suffered a head injury, while her driver, Dharmendra, sustained multiple injuries in the crash. Both are also receiving treatment at Geetanjali Hospital. The black Scorpio carrying the MLA was severely damaged, with visuals showing its mangled remains. Local police and passersby acted swiftly to transport the injured to the hospital.
Four men from the Gujarat-registered vehicle have been detained by the Sukher police, who are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest the other vehicle’s abrupt maneuver on the wrong side of the road triggered the accident.
Deepti Kiran Maheshwari, daughter of the late Kiran Maheshwari, a former Education Minister under Vasundhara Raje’s government, has been a prominent figure in Rajasthan politics. Elected in the 2021 by-election following her mother’s death due to COVID-19 in 2020, she secured the Rajsamand seat again in 2023.
Political leaders, including Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and BJP Vice President Jyoti Mirdha, have expressed concern and prayed for her swift recovery. The incident has highlighted safety concerns on Rajasthan’s highways, which rank fourth nationally for fatalities despite fewer accidents, according to 2021 data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
