Bihar Police Bust Fake Marriage Racket, Arrest 9
Fake brides scam families, 9 arrested
Bihar Police have dismantled a sophisticated fake marriage racket in West Champaran, arresting nine individuals, including four women posing as brides and the alleged mastermind, Ali Ahmed. Operating in the Bagaha and Bettiah areas, the gang targeted vulnerable individuals, luring them into sham marriages before absconding with cash, jewelry, and valuables, leaving victims with financial losses and social stigma.
The women, already married, integrated into victims’ families for short periods to create the illusion of genuine marriages, only to flee with stolen goods. A police raid in the Mainatand area near Bettiah, based on a tip-off, led to the arrests and the seizure of a Bolero vehicle, two motorcycles, and nine mobile phones, now under analysis for further leads. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Prakash Singh stated, “This gang was active for a long time. Further investigations may uncover more victims.”
The racket’s network reportedly extends beyond Bihar, with married women recruited from other states to execute the scams. Victims faced losses in the lakhs, compounded by the social stigma of being duped. The arrests follow a pattern of similar frauds across India, with police urging victims to report incidents despite the associated shame. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover additional accomplices and the full scope of the operation.
