Bengaluru Student Murdered Over Jealousy; Accused Tried Disguise Before Arrest
Bengaluru student strangled by boyfriend after jealousy dispute; accused fled to Tirupati with shaved head.
A 21-year-old college student, Devisri, was allegedly strangled to death by her 31-year-old boyfriend in her rented accommodation in Thammenahalli village on Bengaluru’s northern outskirts on November 23. Police said the murder stemmed from a heated argument over Devisri’s friendship with another man, which the accused, Premavardhan from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, strongly objected to.
Devisri had moved to Bengaluru after completing her pre-university studies and was living with a female friend while pursuing higher education. Premavardhan frequently visited her at the house. According to police, tensions had been building for weeks over her interactions with the other individual. During his visit on November 23, the disagreement escalated, and in a fit of rage, he allegedly strangled her, locked the house from outside, and fled.
The crime went undetected for nearly a day. Devisri last spoke to her father on November 22, and she sounded normal. When the family could not reach her the next day, they asked her roommate to check on her. The friend discovered Devisri’s body and immediately alerted the police. A murder case was registered at Madanayakanahalli police station, and a special team was formed to trace the suspect.

Premavardhan was arrested in Tirupati two days later after he had shaved his head in an apparent attempt to alter his appearance and evade capture. He was brought back to Bengaluru and is currently in custody as investigations continue. Police are examining call records and other evidence to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal argument. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over crimes linked to possessive relationships and honor-related violence in the region.
