Bengaluru Auto Driver Exploits Village Teens, Viral Post Forces Police Accountability

Bengaluru auto driver allegedly extorts Rs 2,400 from two village teenagers.

A social media post alleging that two teenage boys were threatened and extorted by an auto-rickshaw driver in Bengaluru has sparked widespread outrage online and renewed concerns about the treatment of first-time visitors to the city. The allegations were made by a Bengaluru-based tech professional identified as Sanu, who claimed that the incident involved two youngsters from a village who had recently arrived in the city in search of work opportunities.

According to the viral post, the teenagers, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, arrived at the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal and sought transportation to a bus stand from where they intended to travel to Hosur. The auto driver allegedly agreed to take them for Rs 50 per passenger. However, upon reaching the destination, the driver reportedly demanded Rs 3,000 for the journey, leaving the boys shocked and distressed.

Sanu claimed that the teenagers contacted him for help after the dispute escalated. The social media user further alleged that the driver snatched one of the boys' mobile phones and refused to return it. According to the account shared online, the driver then took the teenagers to an isolated location and pressured them into paying a substantial amount before allowing them to leave.

In a subsequent update, Sanu stated that the boys eventually managed to recover their phone but only after paying Rs 2,400 through a digital transaction. He shared what he claimed was a screenshot of the UPI payment and tagged Bengaluru Police, urging authorities to investigate the matter. The post suggested that the payment details could help identify the driver even though the vehicle registration number was reportedly not recorded.

The allegations quickly gained traction on social media, with many users calling for strict action against those responsible if the claims are proven true. Several commenters expressed concern that such incidents could damage Bengaluru's reputation, particularly among visitors arriving in the city for the first time. Others highlighted the importance of ensuring safe and transparent transportation services for migrants, students and tourists.

As of now, the allegations remain based on the claims made in the viral social media posts, and there has been no official confirmation regarding the incident or the identity of the accused driver. However, the case has drawn attention to ongoing complaints about overcharging and misconduct by a small section of transport operators. Authorities are expected to examine the evidence shared online and determine whether further action is warranted.
