Bengal STF Arrests Suspected Pakistani Nationals Near Bangladesh Border

Two suspected Pakistani nationals were arrested by the West Bengal Police Special Task Force near the Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday and charged with espionage, according to lawyers representing the state. The arrests were made near the Benapole border area when the two men were allegedly attempting to enter Bangladesh with the intention of travelling onward to Nepal. The accused have been identified as Rana Rauf Khalid, also known as Wahab Alam, and Md Aziz.

According to a state lawyer, the two men had lived intermittently in Nepal since 2012. The circumstances surrounding their movements and their alleged links to espionage are now being investigated by the West Bengal STF. A Barasat court remanded both accused to police custody until August 26 after they were produced before the court on Wednesday afternoon. The police custody will allow investigators to question the two men about their identities, movements, documents and alleged activities, as well as establish how they entered India and what their intended destination was.

According to one of the state’s lawyers, Indian identity documents, including an Aadhaar card and a voter identity card bearing the name Wahab Alam, were seized from Khalid. The documents are among the material being examined by investigators as part of the case. The lawyer said Khalid told the STF during questioning that Md Aziz, who resides in Kolkata’s Topsia area, had helped him obtain the documents. The alleged use of Indian identity documents is expected to form an important part of the investigation.

Authorities will need to establish whether the documents were genuine, fraudulently obtained or used under an assumed identity. Investigators are also expected to examine the relationship between the two accused and determine whether either man had links to any organised network. The arrests took place in a strategically sensitive area close to the Bangladesh border, where security agencies routinely monitor cross-border movement. The alleged attempt to travel from the border area into Bangladesh, followed by a plan to reach Nepal, has prompted authorities to examine the accused persons’ travel history and their stated or suspected reasons for moving between the countries.

The espionage charges represent serious allegations, and the investigation is expected to determine the evidence supporting them. The arrests and allegations have not yet resulted in a finding of guilt, and the accused will have the opportunity to contest the charges through the judicial process. The police are expected to present further evidence before the court as the investigation progresses.

The case comes under heightened scrutiny because of the accused persons’ alleged foreign nationality, their reported links to Nepal and the seizure of Indian identity documents. With the court granting police custody until August 26, the STF will have additional time to investigate their identities, movements and alleged activities before the matter comes up for further judicial consideration.
