Bengal Actor Denied Relief In Case Linked To 2021 Post-Poll Violence

Court denies relief to Bengal actor in 2021 post-poll violence case.

Actor Parambrata Chatterjee has received interim protection from coercive action in a case linked to alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal, even as the investigation against him is allowed to proceed. The matter is being heard at the Calcutta High Court in connection with an FIR registered over comments allegedly made after the 2021 state Assembly election results.

The FIR, lodged at Gariahat Police Station, pertains to allegations that the actor’s social media remarks may have incited violence following the announcement of election results in May 2021. The petition before the court sought quashing of the FIR, arguing that the proceedings were not legally sustainable.

Hearing the matter, Justice Ajay Kumar Mukherjee directed that no coercive action be taken against Chatterjee for a period of four weeks. However, the court made it clear that the investigation itself would not be halted, allowing police to continue their probe into the allegations.

The court further instructed the actor to cooperate with the investigating agency during the ongoing inquiry. It also asked the state government to submit a detailed investigation report at the next hearing, indicating that the matter will be reviewed further based on findings presented by the police.

According to court records, the FIR was filed on May 21, 2021, under Sections 153A and 109 of the Indian Penal Code, following posts made shortly after the election results were declared on May 2, 2021. The case is part of a broader set of legal proceedings connected to allegations of post-poll violence in the state.

Chatterjee’s legal counsel appeared before the court and argued in favour of quashing the FIR. While the interim relief prevents immediate coercive measures, the continuation of the investigation means the legal process will proceed as the court evaluates the merits of the case in upcoming hearings.
