Ayodhya Ram Temple Trust Meets Today With Theft Row Under Intensifying Scrutiny

Trust reviews developments amid expanding Ram Temple theft investigation.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is set to hold a crucial meeting in Ayodhya on Monday amid an ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of temple donations. According to Trust sources, the meeting is expected to focus on the resignations submitted by General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra, with members likely to deliberate on the way forward as the controversy surrounding the alleged theft of funds continues to unfold.

The meeting will be held at Mani Ram Chhawni, the monastery of Trust president Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, marking the Trust's first formal gathering since allegations of financial irregularities surfaced. The developments have drawn significant public attention given the Trust's responsibility for overseeing the construction and management of the Ram Temple, one of India's most prominent religious projects. While investigations into the alleged embezzlement are ongoing, no official findings have yet been announced.

Trust treasurer Govind Dev Giri has directed all regular and ex-officio members to attend the meeting. The ex-officio members include Union Home Ministry Additional Secretary Prashant Lokhande, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Prasad, Ayodhya District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Nripendra Mishra. Their presence is expected to lend administrative and institutional oversight to discussions on the Trust's functioning amid the ongoing probe.

Apart from considering the resignations of Champat Rai and Anil Mishra, the meeting is expected to review the impact of the allegations on the Trust's operations and discuss measures to maintain transparency and public confidence. Although the Trust has not officially disclosed the detailed agenda, the controversy over the alleged misappropriation of donations is expected to dominate the deliberations. The investigation into the alleged theft remains underway, and authorities have yet to establish the full extent of the alleged financial irregularities.

Sources in Ayodhya indicated that Trust president Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, 89, is likely to attend the meeting following his recent discharge from hospital. His participation would be significant given his position as the head of the Trust and the importance of the decisions expected to be taken during the session. Officials have not indicated whether any immediate decisions regarding the resignations will be announced after the meeting.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was established to oversee the construction and administration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya following the Supreme Court's landmark verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute. As the Trust manages donations received from devotees across India and abroad, allegations of financial irregularities have attracted widespread attention. The outcome of Monday's meeting is expected to shape the Trust's response to the ongoing investigation and could have implications for its administrative structure and public accountability going forward.
