Authorities Demolish Drug Peddler’s Shop In Idukki Under Operation Toofan
Drug-related shop demolished under anti-narcotics Operation Toofan.
Authorities in Kerala’s Idukki district demolished a roadside shop in the Pooppara area on Friday as part of the state police’s ongoing anti-narcotics drive, ‘Operation Toofan’. The action, described by officials as a targeted crackdown on drug distribution points, marks one of the early instances of structural demolition linked to alleged drug trafficking activities under the campaign.
The shop was reportedly operated by 47-year-old Easwaran, a resident of Mudukudi House, who police said had illegally encroached on government land to construct the structure. Investigators alleged that the premises were being used for the sale of banned narcotic substances and other intoxicants, generating significant illicit profits over time.
According to police officials, at least five criminal cases had already been registered against Easwaran in connection with drug-related offences. Despite repeated legal action, authorities said he continued his alleged involvement in illegal trade activities. A notice had earlier been issued directing him to remove the encroachment, but the matter was challenged in the Kerala High Court, which later ruled in favour of the authorities.

Following the court’s decision, the demolition was carried out using a JCB earthmover with the support of the local panchayat and after obtaining necessary legal clearance. Officials said the operation was executed as part of coordinated enforcement measures under Operation Toofan, which aims to dismantle drug supply networks across the state.
Police have indicated that similar enforcement actions will continue against establishments suspected of being involved in narcotics trafficking. Authorities warned that illegally constructed structures used for drug-related activities would be removed, and offenders may face further criminal proceedings, including cancellation of business licences wherever applicable.
Launched as a statewide crackdown, Operation Toofan has led to 3,931 arrests and the registration of 3,657 drug-related cases within its first three weeks. Officials say the campaign will continue with intensified monitoring and enforcement to curb the spread of narcotics and dismantle distribution networks operating in the region.
