One Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others were injured after a patrol team came under suspected militant fire near the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday morning, police officials said. The incident took place around 6:30 am near Nampong Nallah under Nampong Circle, where personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were patrolling an area where border fencing work was underway. The attack has raised security concerns in the strategically sensitive border region. The deceased has been identified as Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, 42. According to preliminary information, suspected militants opened fire on the Assam Rifles patrol team while the personnel were carrying out their duties near the border fencing site.
The sudden attack left one personnel dead and four others injured. The identity of the suspected attackers and the circumstances leading up to the firing were not immediately known. Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu confirmed that police had received information about the incident and directed the officer-in-charge of Changlang police station to gather details. “We have received information about the incident that occurred along the IMB (India-Myanmar Border) and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect all information related to it,” Padu said. Police teams were working to establish the sequence of events and collect further information from the area.
The four injured Assam Rifles personnel were evacuated for medical treatment following the attack. Their condition was not immediately available, and officials were awaiting further details. The security forces are expected to assess the area and gather information about the suspected militants involved in the attack. Details about the weapons used, the number of attackers and whether any further exchange of fire took place were also not immediately available. The incident occurred in Changlang district, which lies in Arunachal Pradesh’s eastern region along the international boundary with Myanmar.
