Assam Rifles Ambushed by Suspected Militants in Manipur’s Tengnoupal

Assam Rifles patrol attacked by militants in Manipur border area.

A patrolling team of Assam Rifles faced a sudden and intense attack from suspected militants in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, close to the India-Myanmar international border, in the early hours of Friday, 28 November 2025. Official sources confirmed that the troops were fired upon without provocation while conducting routine security operations in the sensitive frontier region, highlighting the persistent threat of insurgency along this porous border.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the Assam Rifles personnel exhibited remarkable restraint and professionalism by returning fire in a controlled manner, prioritising the safety of nearby civilians despite coming under direct attack. The troops effectively retaliated while ensuring no collateral damage occurred in the vicinity, demonstrating the high level of training and discipline maintained by Indian security forces operating in conflict-prone areas.

Military authorities have launched extensive search and cordon operations in the region, with additional columns of Assam Rifles and other security forces rushed to the area to neutralise the threat and prevent any follow-up strikes. The operation continues as security forces comb through difficult terrain near the international border, which has historically served as an infiltration route for various armed groups operating in Northeast India.

As of now, no militant organisation has claimed responsibility for the audacious attack, and the exact number of casualties or injuries sustained by the Assam Rifles personnel remains unconfirmed. Authorities are maintaining tight-lipped operational security while the situation develops on the ground.

The incident comes against the backdrop of continuing ethnic tensions and sporadic militant activities in Manipur, including a similar deadly ambush in Bishnupur district in September this year that claimed the lives of two Assam Rifles personnel and left four others injured, underscoring the volatile security environment prevailing in the state.
