Assam Police Seize Yaba Worth Rs 90 Crore, Two Arrested
Assam Police nab two peddlers in major drug operation.
Assam Police seized Yaba tablets worth Rs 90 crore in Cachar district, arresting two drug peddlers in a meticulously planned operation. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the breakthrough on Wednesday, highlighting the state’s relentless efforts to curb narcotics trafficking.
Yaba, known as the "crazy medicine" in Thai, is a dangerous synthetic drug composed of methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant, and caffeine. The seizure of three lakh Yaba tablets underscores the scale of the illicit drug network operating in the region. Acting on credible intelligence, Cachar District Police intercepted a vehicle entering from a neighboring state, uncovering the massive consignment hidden within.
Chief Minister Sarma, in a post on X, commended the police for their swift action. “This operation reflects our zero-tolerance policy toward drugs,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to making Assam drug-free. The two peddlers, apprehended while traveling in the vehicle, are now in custody, and investigations are underway to trace the origins of the consignment and dismantle the broader trafficking network.

The bust is one of the largest in recent times in Assam, raising concerns about the growing prevalence of synthetic drugs in the Northeast. Authorities suspect the drugs were intended for distribution across multiple states, given the sheer volume seized. The police are now intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the racket, with preliminary investigations pointing to cross-border smuggling links.
Local residents and anti-drug activists have hailed the operation as a major victory in the fight against substance abuse. “Such seizures send a strong message to drug traffickers,” said a community leader in Cachar. The Assam government has vowed to continue its aggressive crackdown on narcotics, with CM Sarma urging citizens to report suspicious activities to aid law enforcement efforts.
