Assam Police Recover 37 Kg Gold Worth ₹55 Crore In Major Seizure
Assam Police seize 37 kg gold worth ₹55 crore; one arrested.
Assam Police have seized around 37 kg of gold, valued at nearly ₹55 crore, in a major operation conducted in Guwahati, officials said on Tuesday. One person has been arrested in connection with the recovery, marking one of the largest gold seizures by the state police in recent times.
The accused has been identified as Akshay Bhansore, a resident of Maharashtra’s Sangli district. Police said a case has been registered at Latasil Police Station, and a detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the source and destination of the seized gold. Officials confirmed that the recovered gold has been taken into custody for further examination.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sambhavi Mishra said the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs. She added that preliminary findings suggest the accused had been living in the Gandhi Basti area of Guwahati for the past two years. Police suspect he may have been working as a courier transporting gold consignments across locations.

Investigators are now focusing on tracing the ownership of the seized gold and identifying the individuals or networks involved in its movement. Authorities are examining the accused’s financial records, travel history, and communication data to establish possible links with other members of the suspected network.
Officials further stated that the probe is also aimed at determining whether the seizure is part of a larger interstate gold smuggling racket operating across the Northeast. Police have not ruled out additional arrests as the investigation progresses and more connections are uncovered.
Authorities said coordinated efforts are underway with other investigative agencies to verify the origin of the gold and map the broader network behind its transport. They added that intensified intelligence-based operations against organised smuggling groups, including gold and narcotics networks, will continue across Assam in the coming days.
