Assam Man Held Over Alleged Threat Against Himanta Biswa Sarma For Rs 1 Crore
Assam man arrested over alleged threat targeting Himanta Sarma.
Assam Police arrested a man in Morigaon district after a social media comment allegedly threatening to kill Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for Rs 1 crore appeared during the live broadcast of his Independence Day address. Three other people, including the main suspect's father and brother, were also detained overnight in connection with the case.
The main accused was identified as Abdul Mutaleb, a tailor by profession. Police traced the mobile number displayed with the social media account that posted the alleged threat and found that it was registered in Mutaleb's name. He was subsequently taken into custody by investigators from Bhuragaon Police.
According to the complaint, a person using the name Abdul Mutaleb on a social media platform allegedly offered to kill the Chief Minister for Rs 1 crore and asked anyone willing to provide the money to contact him. The post also allegedly contained slogans supporting Pakistan, including "Pakistan Zindabad", along with remarks directed against India.

The alleged comment surfaced while Sarma was delivering his Independence Day address at the Khanapara veterinary and agricultural field in Guwahati on Friday. The Chief Minister spoke about the state government's development priorities and Assam's future during the programme. Authorities took note of the alleged threat and initiated an investigation into the account and the mobile number associated with it.
Police are examining the social media account and other digital evidence to determine whether Mutaleb personally operated the account and whether he was responsible for the alleged post. Investigators are also questioning the accused to establish the circumstances behind the comment and identify whether anyone else was involved.
Police sources later confirmed that three additional people were taken into custody in Morigaon during the night. They include Mutaleb's father, brother and another person. The three were detained for questioning as investigators continue to verify their possible connection with the alleged social media threat. Further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
