Assam Man Accused Of Wife’s Murder Dies During Police Custody Escape
Accused dies after allegedly attempting to flee police custody.
A man accused of killing his wife died after jumping from a police vehicle while being taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the early hours of Monday, police said. Ramanuj Goswami had been arrested after surrendering to police last week in connection with the death of his wife, Riya Talukdar. The incident occurred while he was being taken from a local police station to the hospital for medical examination.
According to an official, Goswami jumped from the vehicle and fell down a hilly stretch, sustaining a serious head injury. He was subsequently taken to GMCH, where he was declared dead. GMCH Superintendent Devajit Choudhury said Goswami was brought to the hospital at 3.41 a.m. and was declared dead on arrival. He added that the exact cause of death was yet to be ascertained.
Goswami had surrendered to police last week and allegedly confessed to killing Talukdar following a dispute linked to her alleged extramarital relationship, according to police. The couple had been married for less than a year. Goswami was from Assam's Dhubri district, while Talukdar was a native of Guwahati.

The death occurred during the course of the police investigation and while Goswami was in custody. Police officials have not indicated any confirmed cause beyond the injuries sustained during the fall, while the hospital authorities said the cause of death would need to be established. Reports also said there were no bullet injury marks on his body.
The case had drawn attention following the discovery of Talukdar's body and the subsequent arrest of Goswami. With his death, questions surrounding the circumstances of his death in custody are likely to remain part of the ongoing proceedings. Authorities are expected to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the incident and the medical cause of death as the investigation continues.
