Assam Court Orders Trial in Zubeen Garg Death; Murder Charges Against 4 Accused

A special fast-track court in Assam has framed charges against seven accused in connection with the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, paving the way for the trial to begin. The court on Tuesday rejected petitions seeking discharge under Section 250 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), observing that there was “strong prima facie material” against the accused. Among the charges framed are murder charges against four individuals allegedly linked to the incident surrounding the singer’s death in Singapore last year.

Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, during a visit to Singapore, where he was serving as a cultural brand ambassador for the Northeast India Festival. Before the festival commenced, the singer reportedly attended a yacht outing organized by members of the Assam Association Singapore. During the outing, Garg allegedly lost consciousness while swimming and was later declared dead at Singapore General Hospital. Investigators later stated that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident, adding further complexity to the case.

The Assam court, while framing charges, said the evidence collected during the investigation was sufficient at this stage to proceed with trial proceedings. The judge noted that the accused could not be discharged merely on preliminary arguments when the prosecution had presented material suggesting potential involvement in the alleged offenses. Legal experts say the court’s reference to “strong prima facie material” indicates that the evidence appears substantial enough to warrant a full examination during trial, though guilt or innocence will ultimately be determined only after judicial proceedings are completed.

The case has attracted widespread public attention in Assam and across the Northeast due to Garg’s immense popularity and cultural influence. Known for his contributions to Assamese music and cinema, the singer enjoyed a massive fan following over several decades. His sudden death had triggered demands for a detailed investigation, with supporters and political figures seeking clarity over the circumstances surrounding the yacht outing and the events leading up to his collapse.

With charges now formally framed, the trial is expected to move into the evidence and witness examination stage in the coming months. Prosecutors are likely to rely on medical findings, digital records, witness testimonies, and other investigative material gathered both in India and Singapore.
