Asian Games-Bound Para-Athlete Chirag Tyagi Shot Dead by Disqualified Rival in Ghaziabad
Para-athlete Chirag Tyagi was shot dead by a rival seeking revenge after disqualification.
A promising national-level para athlete from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly shot dead in Ghaziabad just days after securing qualification for the Para Asian Games scheduled to be held in Japan this October. The victim, 25-year-old Chirag Tyagi, had recently emerged as one of India's rising para-athletics talents after winning a gold medal in the 400-meter race at the National Para Athletics Championship in Bengaluru. His death has sent shockwaves through the sporting community and raised concerns about rivalry-driven violence in competitive sports.
According to family members, Tyagi left his home on Wednesday morning to return to his hostel but later became unreachable. After repeated attempts to contact him failed, the family grew concerned and approached the police to file a missing person complaint. Authorities subsequently launched a search operation and began gathering information regarding his last known movements and contacts.
The case took a tragic turn on Saturday afternoon when police discovered Tyagi's body in the Sai Kunj area of Ghaziabad. Initial examination of the scene suggested that he had suffered a fatal gunshot injury. Investigators immediately began reviewing CCTV footage and collecting evidence from the area to identify those responsible for the crime and establish the sequence of events leading to his death.

Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, police detained fellow para-athlete Yash Khatik. Authorities said Khatik had previously trained and competed alongside Tyagi in athletics events under the blind category. During questioning, investigators learned of an earlier dispute between the two athletes relating to the verification of Khatik's documents, an issue that reportedly led to his disqualification from competition.
Police believe the alleged motive behind the killing was professional revenge. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhaval Jaiswal, Khatik allegedly lured Tyagi to an isolated location before shooting him from behind. Following the interrogation, police formally arrested the accused and registered a case against him. Officials stated that further legal proceedings are underway as investigators continue to examine all aspects of the incident.
Authorities have also deployed teams to recover the weapon believed to have been used in the crime. Investigators are examining whether any other individuals may have assisted in the planning or execution of the attack. Officials added that the exact cause of death and additional forensic details will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received, while the investigation remains ongoing.
