Arson Attack on London Indian Restaurant Leaves Five Injured, Two Critical

Suspected arson at Indian Aroma in Ilford injures five; two arrested.

A devastating arson attack on the Indian Aroma restaurant in Ilford, east London, has left five people injured, two in life-threatening condition, and prompted the arrests of a 15-year-old boy and a 54-year-old man. The blaze, which erupted on Friday night, caused extensive damage to the popular eatery known for its authentic Indian cuisine and vibrant community presence.

The Metropolitan Police were called to the scene on Woodford Avenue, Gants Hill, at approximately 9:02 PM on Friday, following reports of a fire at the restaurant. Emergency responders from the London Ambulance Service treated five individuals—three women and two men, believed to be diners—for burns and smoke inhalation. Two of the victims, a man and a woman, were rushed to a major trauma center and remain in critical condition. The other three were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

The London Fire Brigade reported that part of the ground-floor restaurant was severely damaged. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus rescued the five injured individuals, while approximately nine others managed to escape before emergency services arrived. Authorities believe two additional victims may have fled the scene before police arrived, and efforts to identify them are ongoing.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, from the Met Police’s Central Specialist Crime North unit, stated, “While we have made two arrests, our investigation continues at pace to piece together what happened on Friday evening. I know the community members are concerned and shocked by this incident. I would urge anyone with information or concerns to come forward and speak to police.” The suspects, arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, remain in custody as the investigation unfolds.

Witness accounts and unverified reports suggest that CCTV footage captured a group of individuals wearing face coverings entering the restaurant and pouring liquid on the floor before the fire erupted. Nearby residents reported hearing loud screams as the blaze took hold, underscoring the chaos and fear that gripped the area.

The London Ambulance Service deployed extensive resources, including ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic, an incident response officer, and members of the Hazardous Area Response Team. “We treated five people for burns and smoke inhalation,” a spokesperson said. “Two patients were taken to a major trauma center, and three others were transported to local hospitals.”

Indian Aroma, managed by Rohit Kaluvala, is a well-regarded establishment celebrated for its authentic Indian flavors and high-quality service. The restaurant’s website highlights its appeal to a diverse clientele, including movie executives, film crews, and attendees of cultural and charity events. It has earned multiple curry awards for its distinctive cuisine and commitment to traditional recipes.

The London Fire Brigade continues to investigate the cause of the fire, with a spokesperson noting, “Part of the ground-floor restaurant was damaged by fire. Firefighters rescued five people, and around nine others were able to leave before our arrival.” The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the blaze.

The incident has shaken the local community, with a significant police presence noted in the area over the weekend. Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
