Another UP Woman Burnt Over Dowry Demands
Horrific Dowry Violence Shocks Uttar Pradesh
In a chilling echo of recent events in Greater Noida, another horrific case of dowry-related violence has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh. A 32-year-old trained nurse, Parul, is fighting for her life in a Delhi hospital after being allegedly set on fire by her husband and his relatives in Narangpur village, Amroha district, over unmet dowry demands.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has led to a police case against six individuals, including Parul’s husband, Devendra, a serving Uttar Pradesh Police constable recently transferred from Rampur to Bareilly. Devendra, who was on leave at the time, along with his mother and four male relatives—Sonu, Gajesh, Jitendra, and Santosh—are accused of attempting to burn Parul alive. All six remain at large, with police launching a manhunt to apprehend them.
Parul’s mother, Anita, was alerted by neighbors and found her daughter in agony, severely burnt. “She was writhing in pain,” Anita recounted. “We rushed her to a local hospital, but her critical condition required transfer to Delhi.” Parul, married to Devendra for 13 years and mother to their twin children, a boy and a girl, remains in critical condition.

The Amroha police have registered charges of domestic violence and attempted murder based on a complaint filed by Parul’s brother. This case follows closely on the heels of the tragic death of 26-year-old Nikki Bhati in Greater Noida, who was allegedly set ablaze by her husband, Vipin Bhati, and his family over demands for Rs 36 lakh and a luxury car.
Nikki’s family had already provided a Scorpio SUV, a motorcycle, and jewelry since her 2016 marriage, yet the harassment persisted. Disturbing footage captured by Nikki’s sister Kanchan showed her being dragged by her hair before being engulfed in flames. All four accused in Nikki’s case—Vipin, his parents, and his brother—have been arrested, with Vipin shot in the leg during an alleged escape attempt.
These back-to-back incidents highlight the persistent scourge of dowry-related violence in Uttar Pradesh, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement and societal change.
