Andhra Medical Student Declared Brain Dead After Alleged Drunk Driving Incident

A 28-year-old medical student was declared brain-dead after she was allegedly run over by a car outside a shopping mall in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. The incident occurred on AV Appa Rao Road within the jurisdiction of the Prakash Nagar Police Station. Police have detained two people, including the alleged driver, in connection with the case and launched an investigation into the incident.

According to police, the two accused had allegedly consumed alcohol before arriving at the shopping complex. They reportedly got into an argument with security personnel at the mall, following which they left the premises. Investigators suspect the confrontation left the duo agitated, and while driving away, the car allegedly struck the medical student, identified as Priyanka, who was on the road outside the mall.

Police alleged that the vehicle ran over the victim, causing severe head injuries. She was immediately rushed to a hospital in Rajahmundry for emergency treatment. As her condition remained critical, doctors referred her for advanced neurological care. However, she was later declared brain-dead due to the extent of her injuries. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding organ donation or subsequent medical procedures.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage among students and members of the medical fraternity. Fellow medical students have demanded stringent action against those responsible and called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances leading to the fatal crash. The case has also renewed concerns over alleged drunken driving and public safety in the city.

Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and detained two individuals, including Suravarapu Yaswanth, who was allegedly driving the vehicle at the time of the incident. Investigators are examining the sequence of events, including the reported altercation at the mall, and are expected to determine whether additional charges will be invoked based on the findings of the investigation.
