Amarnath Yatra Security Boost: Kashmir Police Use Facial Recognition To Catch Three Alleged OGWs
Facial recognition helps Kashmir Police arrest three alleged OGWs
Police in Jammu and Kashmir have arrested three alleged Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of militants using a Facial Recognition System (FRS) for the first time during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra security operations, officials said. The arrests were made in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district after the surveillance system generated alerts about the movement of three suspicious individuals. The Facial Recognition System has been deployed by police in Anantnag as part of the wider security arrangements for the annual Amarnath Yatra, which attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the country.
The technology is being used to strengthen surveillance, identify potential security threats and assist personnel in maintaining a secure environment along the pilgrimage route. According to a police spokesperson, the FRS issued timely alerts after detecting the movement of three suspicious men passing through the Sarbal area of Anantnag. Acting on the alerts, security personnel quickly intercepted the individuals and carried out identity verification procedures. During the verification process, police identified all three individuals as alleged Over Ground Workers associated with militant groups, the spokesperson said.
The three men were subsequently arrested and taken into custody for further legal proceedings. Police have not disclosed further details about their identities or the specific allegations against them. Officials described the use of facial recognition technology in the operation as a significant development in security management during the Amarnath Yatra. Police said the successful detection demonstrated the role of technology-based policing in strengthening the security network and improving the ability to identify suspected threats.

The Amarnath Yatra is considered one of the most significant annual religious pilgrimages in India, with devotees travelling through challenging Himalayan terrain to visit the holy Amarnath cave shrine. Given the region’s history of militancy-related incidents, security agencies deploy extensive measures every year to protect pilgrims, including surveillance systems, additional security personnel and intelligence coordination. Police said the deployment of modern surveillance tools such as facial recognition technology is part of ongoing efforts to enhance security capabilities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Authorities have maintained that such systems help security forces respond more effectively to potential threats while ensuring the smooth conduct of major public events. The police spokesperson added that security agencies remain committed to using advanced technologies and maintaining a strong security framework to protect pilgrims and preserve peace in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The arrests mark an important step in the use of artificial intelligence-assisted surveillance in counter-security operations during the pilgrimage season.
