Air India Express Flight Returns to Kochi After Engine Oil Warning Mid-Air

An Air India Express Boeing 737 operating flight IX 415 from Kochi to Abu Dhabi was forced to return to Kochi after the crew detected a rapid drop in the oil quantity of one of the aircraft’s engines. The incident occurred after the aircraft had been airborne for about 50 minutes, prompting the crew to assess the situation and abandon the planned journey to Abu Dhabi.

The aircraft was cruising at an altitude of around 36,000 feet when the pilot and co-pilot noticed that the oil quantity in Engine 1 was falling rapidly. As the warning developed, the crew carried out a FORDEC assessment, a structured decision-making process used by flight crews to evaluate risks and determine the safest course of action during abnormal situations.

With the engine oil quantity continuing to decline, the crew decided that continuing towards Abu Dhabi was not appropriate. They turned the aircraft around and headed back towards Cochin International Airport. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure in response to the worsening engine oil indication and the potential risks associated with continuing the flight.

Sources said the situation became more serious when the oil pressure in Engine 1 entered the danger zone. The crew subsequently shut down the affected engine as part of their response to the warning. Modern commercial aircraft are designed to continue flying safely following an engine shutdown, allowing pilots to focus on landing at a suitable airport.

The Boeing 737 subsequently landed safely at Cochin International Airport. There were no reports in the available information of injuries among passengers or crew following the incident. The aircraft’s return brought the Abu Dhabi-bound service to an early end after the crew prioritised safety in response to the engine-related warning.

The incident highlights the importance of monitoring engine parameters during flight and following established procedures when abnormal readings occur. The crew’s decision to turn back to Kochi and shut down the affected engine after the oil pressure reached the danger zone allowed the aircraft to return safely. Further technical checks would be required to determine the precise cause of the rapid loss of engine oil.
