Afghanistan Claims It Downed Pakistan's F-16 as Border War Reaches Dangerous New Level

The Taliban shares footage of a burning F-16 bearing Pakistani flag markings after Kabul strikes.

Afghan forces have released a video claiming to show the wreckage of a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet, intensifying tensions between the two neighbouring countries. The footage, shared by an X handle named ‘Afghanistan Defence', shows a burning aircraft with the Pakistani flag visible on its vertical stabiliser and the identification number ‘85510’ near the exhaust. While the Taliban have asserted that they downed the jet, independent verification of the video’s authenticity has not been possible.

The incident follows Pakistan’s recent airstrikes on multiple Afghan cities, including the capital, Kabul. Islamabad described these operations as a response to attacks on its border troops, while the Taliban government maintains that its actions were in retaliation for previous Pakistani strikes. Both sides report significant casualties, although exact figures remain disputed amid the ongoing conflict along the shared border.

Pakistani F-16 jets, purchased from the United States, are considered high-value assets within the country’s air force. Analysts have previously described them as more symbolic than operationally decisive in the region’s aerial conflicts. The Indian Air Force has claimed to have downed over two Pakistani F-16s in past confrontations, reflecting the long-standing aerial rivalry between South Asian militaries.

The release of the video appears strategically timed, surfacing hours after Pakistan escalated its bombing campaigns in Afghanistan. Observers suggest that these developments mark a sharp deterioration in regional security, as the Taliban launches counter-operations and both sides accuse each other of violating territorial sovereignty. The conflict underscores the fragile stability in Afghanistan, a country that has historically faced prolonged wars involving major global and regional powers.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan are further complicated by accusations of cross-border militancy. Pakistan alleges that Afghan territory has been used by militant groups to carry out attacks on Pakistani soil, a claim that the Taliban government firmly denies. This cycle of retaliation has contributed to a heightened security standoff, with both nations blaming the other for escalating violence and civilian casualties.

The current escalation threatens broader regional stability as international observers call for restraint from both sides. While details of the alleged F-16 downing remain unverified, the incident highlights the volatility along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Analysts warn that continued airstrikes and counterattacks could lead to a protracted military confrontation, raising concerns over civilian safety and the risk of wider conflict in South Asia.
