ACP Among Three Cops Suspended Over Custodial Death in Cuttack

Three police officers, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) overseeing Choudwar police station in Cuttack district, have been suspended following the alleged custodial death of a man detained in a vehicle theft case. The suspensions were ordered by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi amid claims of police brutality.

Rasananda Nayak, a resident of the neighbouring Dhenkanal district with a reported history of bike thefts, died while in custody, sparking outrage and demands for accountability. Custodial deaths in India often raise concerns about human rights violations, with families frequently alleging torture, though investigations are required to substantiate such claims.

ACP Biswa Ranjan Sahu was suspended based on a report detailing the incident at Choudwar police station, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office. Earlier, Sub-Inspector Niranjan Goda and Constable Kamal Lochan Majhi were also placed under suspension for dereliction of duty. Nayak was detained recently in connection with a vehicle theft probe and held at the station.

His family alleges he was subjected to severe physical assault, leading to his suicide. Nayak's brother claimed to have witnessed three officers beating him and stated that the torture was unbearable. Nayak's wife echoed these accusations, highlighting the need for a thorough probe into police conduct.

Nayak was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries around 12:30 PM on Monday. The incident has drawn attention to ongoing issues of police accountability in Odisha, where similar cases have prompted reforms and enquiries in the past. The suspensions aim to facilitate an impartial investigation, ensuring transparency in handling such sensitive matters. Police officials have refrained from commenting on the family's allegations, pending an official inquiry.
