AAP Criticizes Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s Lavish Karwa Chauth Celebration
Delhi CM’s festive event sparks AAP-BJP clash over priorities.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has sharply criticized Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s public Karwa Chauth celebration, dismissing it as an extravagant spectacle that burdens public resources. The event held at the Mukhyamantri Jan Sewa Sadan saw Gupta joined by female politicians, spouses of Union ministers, MPs, MLAs, councillors, and other prominent women, drawing sharp rebuke from AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj for its scale and implications.
Bharadwaj, speaking at a Diwali Milan event for autorickshaw drivers, ridiculed the celebration in a widely shared video on X. “Rekha Gupta ji celebrated Karwa Chauth with her husband. What’s the big deal? You must have seen the video; it’s everywhere. On one side is the husband, and on the other, around a hundred security guards, whose own wives couldn’t celebrate because of this,” he remarked, highlighting a security guard holding Gupta’s Karwa Chauth thali while his own family was sidelined. Bharadwaj argued that the lavish display underscores misplaced priorities, stating, “This is the worth of your vote,” pointing to the strain on public servants.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fired back, accusing AAP of disrespecting cultural traditions. In a post on X, the party declared, “The enemies of Sanatan Dharma are deeply pained to see how the woman Chief Minister of Delhi is celebrating the festival of Karwa Chauth with hundreds of women.” They further took a swipe at AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, alleging his “sheesh mahal” excludes common people, contrasting it with Gupta’s inclusive event. The BJP defended the celebration as a proud display of tradition, escalating the war of words.

In response, Bharadwaj shared his full speech, accusing the BJP of governance based on “lies” and doubling down on his critique of the event’s optics. The controversy has ignited a broader debate on the use of public resources for cultural celebrations and the political exploitation of festivals, with both parties leveraging the incident to rally their bases ahead of upcoming electoral battles in Delhi.
