60-Year-Old Woman Dies After Delhi Bus Runs Over Her, Family Stages Protest

A 60-year-old woman was killed after being run over by a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) cluster bus near the Pooth Kalan bus stand in outer Delhi on Saturday. The incident sparked anger among the victim’s family members and local residents, who gathered at the accident site and briefly blocked the road in protest.

Police officials said the situation was later brought under control, while legal action was initiated against the bus driver and people allegedly involved in damaging the vehicle. The deceased woman was identified as Indira, wife of Ramesh and a resident of Sultanpuri. According to police officials, the accident occurred near the Pooth Kalan bus stand on Kanjhawala Road.

A PCR call regarding the incident was received at the Sultanpuri police station at around 11:05 am, following which a police team was immediately dispatched to the location to assess the situation and provide assistance. When the police team reached the spot, they found Indira lying unconscious near the rear wheel of a DTC cluster bus.

The bus was operating on route number 114A, which runs between Azadpur and Auchandi Border. Officials said the woman had suffered severe injuries after being struck by the vehicle. She was immediately shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri for medical attention. Despite efforts by emergency responders, doctors at the hospital declared Indira brought dead.

Police officials said the body was later sent for necessary procedures as part of the investigation. The incident has raised concerns over pedestrian safety, especially around busy roads and public transport points where a large number of commuters and residents frequently move throughout the day.

Following the woman’s death, her family members and local residents gathered near the accident site and staged a protest. The group blocked the road temporarily, causing disruption to traffic movement in the area. The protesters expressed anger over the death and demanded accountability from those responsible for the accident. During the protest, police said some unidentified individuals allegedly became violent and pelted stones at the DTC cluster bus involved in the accident.

The attack reportedly damaged the window panes of the vehicle. Authorities intervened to control the situation and prevent further escalation. Police have initiated separate legal proceedings against those accused of vandalising the bus. The bus driver, identified as Rajesh, was apprehended by police after the accident. The vehicle involved in the incident was seized, and a case was registered against the driver.

Investigators are now examining the circumstances that led to the collision, including witness statements and other available evidence from the accident site. Road accidents involving buses and other public transport vehicles remain a major concern in Delhi, where heavy traffic, crowded roads and pedestrian movement often create challenging conditions.

Authorities have repeatedly emphasised the need for safer driving practices, better traffic management and increased awareness among both drivers and pedestrians to reduce accidents. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over safety near bus stands and busy stretches of roads in the national capital. While police continue their investigation, officials are expected to determine whether negligence, road conditions or other factors contributed to the accident.

As the probe progresses, authorities have assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. The tragic death of Indira has left her family and the local community grieving, while the incident has renewed discussions about improving road safety measures for pedestrians and commuters across Delhi.
