26/11 Mumbai Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana Granted Phone Calls by Delhi Court

26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana gets court nod for 3 monitored phone calls; custody extended till Sept 8.

A Delhi court on Wednesday permitted Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, to make three phone calls this month to his brother to discuss securing a private counsel. Special Judge Chander Jit Singh, presiding over the in-chamber proceedings, stipulated that the calls be recorded and conducted in English or Hindi in the presence of prison authorities. The court also extended Rana’s judicial custody until September 8, 2025, following his virtual appearance.

Rana, allegedly a close associate of David Coleman Headley, a key conspirator in the 26/11 attacks, was extradited to India after the US Supreme Court rejected his review plea against extradition on April 4, 2025. The legal aid counsel, Piyush Sachdeva, requested additional time to review documents in the chargesheet and supplementary chargesheet, indicating ongoing preparations for the high-profile case.

The November 26, 2008, Mumbai attacks, executed by 10 Pakistani terrorists, targeted a railway station, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish centre, resulting in 166 deaths over nearly 60 hours. Rana’s alleged involvement has drawn significant attention, and the court’s decision marks a critical development in the ongoing legal proceedings against him in India.
