2 Nigerians Held in Gurugram for Cheating Employees by Impersonating Company Directors

Two Nigerian nationals arrested by Gurugram cyber police for impersonating company directors on WhatsApp and extorting Rs 10 lakh from employees.

Two Nigerian nationals have been arrested for allegedly cheating several employees in Gurugram by luring them with fake job offers and fraudulently extracting money, police said on Tuesday. The arrests were made following multiple complaints from victims who claimed they were duped under the pretext of recruitment-related processes.

According to the Gurugram Police, the accused contacted job seekers through emails, messaging platforms, and phone calls, posing as representatives of reputed multinational companies. Victims were offered attractive employment opportunities and were later asked to pay various fees, including registration charges, security deposits, and document verification costs, to proceed with the hiring process.

Police officials said the accused used forged documents, fake company profiles, and spoofed email addresses to make the offers appear legitimate. Once the victims transferred the money, communication was either cut off completely or delayed with false assurances, prompting several complainants to approach the police after realising they had been cheated.

During the investigation, cybercrime and local police teams tracked the suspects’ digital footprints and financial transactions, which eventually led to their identification and arrest. The police recovered multiple mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, and bank-related documents believed to have been used in carrying out the fraud. Authorities are also examining whether the accused were part of a larger network operating across multiple cities.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. Police said the accused have been remanded to custody and further interrogation is underway to identify additional victims and possible accomplices.

The Gurugram Police have urged job seekers to exercise caution while responding to unsolicited employment offers, particularly those demanding upfront payments. Officials advised verifying recruiters through official company channels and reporting suspicious activity to cybercrime helplines to prevent similar frauds in the future.
