17-year-old Kashmiri shawl seller brutally beaten with iron rods in Uttarakhand's Vikas Nagar after his identity was questioned.
In a disturbing incident in Uttarakhand, a 17-year-old Kashmiri shawl seller, Tabish Ahmed, was brutally assaulted by a group of individuals in Vikas Nagar on Wednesday evening. His cousin, who was with him at the time, escaped with minor injuries.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), the attackers, including a local shopkeeper and some residents, enquired about the boys’ identity. Upon learning they were Muslim and from Kashmir, they assaulted Tabish and his cousin using iron rods and sticks.
Tabish sustained serious head injuries and a fracture in his left arm. He was initially treated at a local hospital before being shifted to Doon Hospital in Dehradun for specialized care. Reports indicate he required 11 stitches and continues to receive treatment.

JKSA national convenor Nasir Khuehami said the incident was reported to the Uttarakhand DGP, who confirmed that an FIR has been registered. The association has urged the state’s Chief Minister to ensure strict legal action against all perpetrators.
The assault is part of a disturbing pattern of harassment and targeted violence faced by Kashmiri traders and students across states such as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. These repeated attacks have created fear and uncertainty among Kashmiri students and traders pursuing livelihoods outside Jammu and Kashmir.
The JKSA has also written to the Union Home Minister seeking urgent intervention to curb intimidation and protect the rights of Kashmiri students and shawl vendors. The organization emphasized that such incidents highlight the need for immediate action to safeguard minorities from targeted attacks.
