12-year-old boy dies after falling into lift shaft in Mumbai's Kurla

A 12-year-old boy died after falling into a lift shaft while playing with friends at a residential building in Mumbai's Kurla area, police said. The incident took place on Monday night at Shamim Tower in the Nehru Nagar locality. The child, identified as Mohammad Zain Zamir Tahsildar, suffered critical injuries in the fall and was later declared dead at a hospital.

According to the preliminary investigation, Mohammad was playing with his friends on the 10th floor of the residential building when the incident occurred. Police said the boy allegedly leaned against the outer door of the lift and lost his balance. He then fell into the lift shaft, sustaining severe injuries as a result of the fall.

People at the building rushed to help the injured child following the incident. He was taken to Sion Hospital for emergency medical treatment, but doctors declared him dead before treatment could begin. The entire incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed inside the residential building. Investigators are reviewing the footage to establish the exact sequence of events and determine how the outer lift door opened or failed to prevent access to the shaft. The video is expected to form an important part of the investigation into the child's death.

Nehru Nagar Police have registered an Accidental Death Report and launched a detailed investigation. Officers are examining the condition, maintenance and operation of the lift as part of the inquiry. Statements from residents, building management representatives and other people who may have information about the incident are also expected to be considered.

Police said they are investigating whether any negligence in the maintenance or operation of the lift contributed to the accident. Authorities will examine the available evidence before determining responsibility, and appropriate legal action will be taken if any safety lapses or negligence are established. The investigation remains underway as officials seek to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
