11-year-old boy dies following alleged attack during quarrel.
An argument between two children during play allegedly turned fatal in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district on Tuesday, after a nine-year-old boy allegedly stabbed an 11-year-old Class VII student in the chest. The incident took place in the Chhipiyan locality of Jaspur, where the two children lived in the same neighbourhood and were reportedly playing together before the quarrel broke out.
According to police, the two children had an altercation over an unspecified issue during which the younger boy allegedly picked up a knife and attacked the older child. The injured boy was rushed to a hospital by his family, but doctors declared him dead despite efforts to save him. He was the youngest child in his family, while his father runs a hardware shop near their residence.
A relative of the deceased alleged that the nine-year-old had previously been involved in quarrels and had displayed aggressive behaviour. Police have not independently confirmed these claims. Investigators also learnt that the younger child’s father died of a serious illness last year and that his family was facing financial difficulties. The boy was reportedly not attending school, while police were trying to trace him following the incident and had called his mother to the police station for questioning.

Police are examining CCTV footage as part of the investigation to establish the sequence of events. Authorities have also been gathering other evidence and working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal altercation. Additional police personnel were deployed in Chhipiyan as a precaution after the incident, amid tension in the locality.
Local MLA Adesh Chauhan visited the post-mortem facility in Kashipur and offered condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as deeply distressing. Jaspur Station House Officer Rajesh Pandey confirmed that police had received a written complaint and that further legal action would follow the prescribed procedure. As the alleged assailant is nine years old, authorities will handle the matter under the legal framework applicable to children, with the identities of the children requiring protection.
Dehradun-based clinical psychologist Dr Mukul Sharma noted that violent behaviour in a child can have multiple contributing factors, including emotional outbursts, exposure to violence, family or social stress, mental distress and access to potentially dangerous objects. Advocate Virendra Khurana noted that although the alleged act falls under the murder provision of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a nine-year-old is exempt from criminal prosecution under the applicable provision and would be dealt with as a Child in Conflict with Law under the Juvenile Justice Act through the Juvenile Justice Board.
