10-year-old girl abducted and killed in Coimbatore.

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and killed after she went out to buy groceries in the Sulur area of Coimbatore district, triggering widespread outrage, protests, and a sharp political exchange over law and order in the state. According to police, the girl went missing on Thursday evening after stepping out of her home to purchase groceries.

Her body was later found on Friday near Kannampalayam lake in Sulur with visible injuries. Authorities said two suspects, identified as Karthik and Mohan Raj, have been arrested in connection with the alleged abduction and murder. The incident quickly sparked tension in the locality, with grieving family members and residents staging protests outside the Sulur police station demanding swift justice.

The family also reportedly refused to accept the child’s body initially, seeking assurances from the state leadership regarding strict action against those responsible. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay responded to the incident, describing it as a “horrific” and “unforgivable” crime. He stated that such acts of violence would not be tolerated and assured that strict action would be taken against those involved. His remarks came amid growing public anger and political pressure over the case.

Senior police officials, including Tamil Nadu Director General of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore, visited Coimbatore to oversee the investigation. Authorities said the case is being probed thoroughly, with forensic and field-level evidence being examined to establish the sequence of events leading to the crime. The case has also escalated into a political controversy, with opposition parties criticising the government over the state’s law and order situation.

Leaders from the DMK alleged a rise in major crimes since the new administration took office, while ruling and allied representatives countered that strict action would be taken and blamed previous governance for existing challenges in policing and safety systems. Meanwhile, government representatives and local legislators visited the victim’s family at the hospital and assured them of justice. Officials reiterated that the investigation is progressing on priority and that the accused would face the strictest possible punishment under the law if found guilty.
