Ex-Imam Gets Life Sentence for Abusing Girls Using Fake Spiritual Powers
Ex-imam Abdul Halim Khan was sentenced to life for abusing girls using fake spiritual powers.
A former imam in East London has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of multiple sexual offenses involving women and minors over more than a decade. The case drew widespread attention after investigators revealed that the accused had allegedly misused his position as a religious leader to manipulate victims through fear and false spiritual claims.
The accused, identified as Abdul Halim Khan, was found guilty of 21 offenses, including rape, sexual assault, and crimes against minors. According to the court, the incidents took place between 2004 and 2015. At Snaresbrook Crown Court, the judge ordered a life sentence and said he must serve a minimum of 20 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Investigators from the Metropolitan Police said the former imam targeted members of the Bangladeshi Muslim community in east London and used his influence to gain their trust. Authorities stated that victims were allegedly manipulated into believing that refusing him or reporting the abuse could bring harm to them or their families through supernatural forces.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the accused abused his authority for personal exploitation and worked to silence victims through fear and intimidation. Prosecutors also relied on cultural experts during the trial to help explain references to spiritual beliefs and practices that were central to the case.
Police said the investigation began in 2018 after one victim reported concerns to a teacher. Officers later interviewed dozens of witnesses and examined several digital devices during the inquiry. In February this year, the jury convicted Khan on multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, and offenses involving minors.
One survivor, in a statement shared through police, said the verdict brought a sense of justice after years of trauma and expressed hope that other survivors would feel encouraged to speak out and seek support.
