PM Modi’s Heartfelt Mahalaya Wishes Usher in Durga Puja Festivities

Mahalaya marks the start of Durga Puja, a vibrant celebration of good over evil.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to the nation on the occasion of Mahalaya, a significant day that heralds the beginning of Durga Puja celebrations. In a post on X, he wrote, “Wishing you all Shubho Mahalaya! As the sacred days of Durga Puja draw near, may our lives be filled with light and purpose. May the divine blessings of Maa Durga bring unwavering strength, lasting joy, and wonderful health.”

Mahalaya, observed at the conclusion of the 16-day ‘Shradh’ or ‘Pitru Paksha’ period dedicated to honoring ancestors, marks the onset of Devi Paksha, a 10-day celebration culminating in Durga Puja. This auspicious day symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, commemorating Goddess Durga’s arrival on Earth to vanquish the demon king Mahishasura.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also shared her greetings, stating on social media, “Awake Durga, awake, bearer of ten weapons.” She added, “On the occasion of Tan, Agomoni, and Abahan, I offer my heartfelt Mahalaya greetings to all. On this occasion, I am sharing with all of you a new Puja song written and composed by me.”

In West Bengal, Mahalaya is marked by the iconic pre-dawn broadcast of Mahishasura Mardini, a cherished program of hymns and chants invoking Goddess Durga, which remains a beloved tradition for many. The day also sees thousands performing ‘tarpan’ rituals along the banks of the Hooghly River and other water bodies, paying respects to ancestors and signaling the start of the festive season.

Following Mahalaya, preparations for Durga Puja intensify across West Bengal, with pandals coming to life and sculptors performing the ‘Chokhhu Daan’ ritual, painting the eyes of Goddess Durga’s idols to complete their creation. This vibrant festival, steeped in devotion and cultural splendor, continues to unite communities in celebration of divine strength and righteousness.
