LaGuardia Airport Runway Shut After Sinkhole Discovery Causes Major Disruptions
Sinkhole at LaGuardia Airport runway causes shutdown and widespread flight delays.
New York’s LaGuardia Airport faced significant operational disruption on Wednesday after a sinkhole was discovered along a key runway route, forcing the immediate closure of Runway 4/22. The incident led to widespread flight delays at one of the busiest airports in the United States. Airport authorities said the discovery was made during routine inspection checks and prompted urgent safety measures to prevent further risk to aircraft operations. The closure quickly affected arrival and departure schedules across multiple airlines.
The sinkhole, identified around 11 a.m. local time, was located on a primary operational stretch of Runway 4/22, a critical part of LaGuardia’s flight network. Following the detection, airport officials shut down the runway as a precaution and restricted all aircraft movement in the affected zone. Emergency engineering teams were deployed immediately to evaluate the extent of the subsurface damage. Heavy machinery, including excavators, was brought in to begin assessment and initial stabilisation work.
LaGuardia Airport officials issued an advisory on social media platform X, informing passengers about the disruption and urging them to check flight status directly with airlines. The advisory also indicated that weather conditions were contributing to operational difficulties at the airport. Travellers were warned of delays and possible schedule changes as authorities worked to manage both the runway damage and ongoing air traffic demands. Airlines were forced to reschedule and reroute several flights.

The situation was further complicated by forecasts of severe afternoon thunderstorms across the New York metropolitan area, which intensified delays and disrupted flight sequencing. Repair crews continued working on stabilising the affected section of the runway, with continuous monitoring of the subsurface condition. According to reports, the closure of Runway 4/22 was extended through Thursday morning as restoration efforts continued under tight safety protocols. The combined impact of weather and infrastructure damage created sustained pressure on airport operations.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the disruption resulted in significant arrival delays, averaging around 90 minutes by mid-afternoon. Air traffic controllers were forced to implement spacing measures and manage reduced runway capacity, further slowing down operations. The incident caused a ripple effect across domestic flight schedules, affecting connecting flights nationwide. Authorities said restoring full runway integrity remains the top priority before normal operations can resume safely.
Officials at LaGuardia Airport said safety checks and structural assessments will continue before reopening the runway to full traffic. Passengers were advised to remain in contact with airlines for real-time updates as repair work progresses. Airport authorities also stated that a full operational recovery would depend on weather conditions and the completion of necessary engineering repairs.
