Fire Breaks Out At South 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad Office In Kolkata
Fire breaks out at government office in Kolkata’s Alipore area.
A major fire broke out at a government office building in Kolkata’s Alipore area on Wednesday morning, sending thick black smoke into the sky and triggering an emergency response from the fire services. The incident occurred at the multi-storey South 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad office, raising concerns over possible damage to public records and infrastructure.
According to local reports, smoke was first noticed emerging from the building around 10 a.m., following which the Fire Department was immediately alerted. Within minutes, at least 10 fire engines were deployed to the site as firefighters began operations to bring the blaze under control.
Officials said the fire is suspected to have started due to a short circuit in an air conditioning unit on the fourth floor. It then rapidly spread to the upper floors, including the fifth and sixth levels, intensifying the situation. A portion of the building’s roof is also reported to have collapsed due to the intensity of the flames.

Firefighters managed to rescue at least two individuals trapped inside the building, while another person reportedly exited using a rope. Authorities said that some people may still be inside, but rescue operations were being hampered by narrow access routes and surrounding trees, which made it difficult to position ladders and equipment effectively.
Despite the severity of the blaze, officials confirmed that there have been no reported casualties or injuries so far. However, the building was engulfed in dense smoke, and emergency teams continue to work cautiously to ensure all occupants are safely evacuated.
The affected building houses several government offices, and authorities temporarily cut off electricity to the premises as a precautionary measure. Firefighters are also taking steps to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby government buildings in the Alipore complex, while an investigation into the exact cause of the fire is expected to follow once the situation is brought under control.
