Yuzvendra Chahal Named Chief Story Officer in Ad Campaign Referencing Viral Sugar Daddy T-Shirt

Indian Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal has come under fresh online criticism after a promotional campaign appeared to reference the viral “sugar daddy” moment linked to his divorce from choreographer and influencer Dhanashree Verma. The controversy resurfaced after a marketing collaboration with Story TV, where Chahal was introduced as the platform’s Chief Story Officer. In a promotional clip shared by founder and CEO Saurabh Pandey, the phrase “Zero Sugar (Daddy) Diet” was visible in the background, prompting many social media users to connect it with the cricketer’s earlier court appearance.

Last year, Chahal had grabbed headlines when he attended his final divorce hearing wearing a T-shirt that read, “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy.” The slogan quickly went viral and became a talking point across social media platforms. Following the new advertisement, several users online criticised the campaign, calling it insensitive and accusing the cricketer of capitalising on a personal chapter of his life. The clip circulated widely on Reddit, where reactions were largely negative.

One user wrote that associating the “sugar daddy” phrase with the former couple for advertising was “below the line” and “disgusting”. Another user called the move “cringe”, while a third alleged that Chahal was repeatedly drawing attention to the divorce.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were officially granted a divorce on March 20 last year. The former couple had filed a joint petition citing incompatibility and personal differences after living separately for about 18 months since June 2022.

Their separation had generated significant public attention at the time. Reports had suggested an alimony settlement of ₹4.75 crore, though neither Chahal nor Dhanashree publicly confirmed the figure. Chahal’s outfit at the final hearing had earlier sparked debate, with Dhanashree reportedly expressing discomfort over what she viewed as turning a private matter into a public spectacle.
