'Will You Win The World Cup For Me?' Suryakumar's Call to Ishan Kishan Revealed

Suryakumar Yadav reveals the emotional phone call he made to Ishan Kishan before the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav revealed that he once asked teammate Ishan Kishan a bold question before the tournament — “Will you win the World Cup for me?” — as the India national cricket team went on to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup with a commanding 96-run victory over the New Zealand national cricket team in the final. The triumph marked India’s third T20 World Cup title and their second consecutive crown after the 2024 victory, cementing the team’s dominance in the shortest format of the game.

Reflecting on the victory in an interview with the International Cricket Council, Yadav said the team’s preparation played a crucial role in their success. He explained that India had carefully studied home conditions and developed a strategy suited to Indian pitches and pressure situations. According to the captain, the team’s mindset throughout the tournament focused on collective responsibility rather than individual milestones.

Yadav himself scored 242 runs during the tournament but stressed that the side’s success was built on selfless contributions from every player. The captain said players were encouraged to think about what the team required at any given moment instead of chasing personal records. That philosophy, he said, created a strong sense of unity within the squad and allowed them to perform consistently under pressure.

India dominated the early stages of the tournament by finishing unbeaten at the top of Group A. The campaign, however, was not without setbacks. The team suffered a heavy 76-run defeat against the South African national cricket team during the Super Eight stage before bouncing back strongly. India then defeated the West Indies cricket team in a must-win encounter, overcame the England cricket team in the semi-final, and ultimately outplayed New Zealand in the title clash.

The skipper also praised the resilience shown by teammates who recovered from difficult starts in the competition. Abhishek Sharma overcame early struggles to score a crucial half-century in the final, while Kishan made a remarkable return to international cricket after nearly two years away. Kishan finished the tournament with 317 runs in nine matches, proving pivotal to India’s batting success.

Among the standout performers was Sanju Samson, who scored 321 runs — the highest by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup — to win the Player of the Tournament award. Meanwhile, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah delivered decisive spells, including 4/15 in the final, earning the Player of the Match honour. Looking ahead, Yadav said the team is already targeting future milestones, including a possible historic third consecutive title and cricket’s debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics.
