Vijay’s UK Visit: Investment Push, Motorsports City Plan On Agenda

Investment and motorsports plans feature prominently during Vijay’s UK visit.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s first overseas trip since taking office is focused on attracting British investment and strengthening industrial ties, while also exploring opportunities linked to motorsport and the automotive sector. During his visit to the UK, the state government is seeking to leverage the recently operationalised India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) to expand investment and commercial cooperation.

CETA came into effect on July 15 and has opened opportunities for Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing and services sectors, according to the state government. Textiles and clothing, leather and footwear, automobile components, engineering goods and electronics have been identified as sectors that could benefit from improved access to the UK market. The agreement is also expected to facilitate joint ventures, technical cooperation and fresh investments.

The government is also seeking to build on the existing presence of British companies in Tamil Nadu. British firms have operated in the state across areas including engineering, financial services and technology, with several maintaining manufacturing facilities and global capability centres. Vijay’s visit is aimed at encouraging these companies to expand their existing operations while attracting new investments in advanced manufacturing, automobiles and electric vehicles, electronics and global capability centres.

The visit also has a strong motorsport component as Tamil Nadu advances its plan for a world-class Motor Sports City. Vijay is scheduled to wave the green flag at the Silverstone round of the Le Mans Cup, where 44 cars are set to compete. The Le Mans Cup announced Vijay’s participation as a special guest and said he would support Indian drivers competing in the UK.

Beyond attending the race, Vijay is expected to study Silverstone’s track design, safety systems and commercial operations as Tamil Nadu explores how to develop a sustainable motorsport ecosystem. The state government is looking at the potential for sports tourism and specialist automotive industries alongside racing infrastructure, with the broader aim of linking motorsport with automobile manufacturing, technology, entertainment and tourism.

The investment push comes after the Tamil Nadu government said it had signed memoranda of understanding for investments exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore during the first 100 days of the Vijay government, including a significant focus on electric vehicle manufacturing. Vijay’s delegation includes Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna, SDAT Member Secretary Meghanath Reddy and Guidance Tamil Nadu CEO Deepak Jacob, with the UK visit combining investment outreach with the state’s automotive and sporting ambitions.
