VD Satheesan Refuses Secondary Role, Escalates Kerala CM Race Within Congress

VD Satheesan insists on top Kerala role, intensifying Congress internal leadership struggle.

A leadership tussle within the Kerala unit of the Indian National Congress has intensified, with senior leader V D Satheesan reportedly taking a firm stand that he is unwilling to accept any role other than the Chief Minister’s post, according to party sources. The internal disagreement comes at a time when the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is attempting to consolidate its position ahead of a potential return to power in the state.

The reported standoff has created friction within the party’s state leadership as well as with the central high command. Sources suggest that while Satheesan is being viewed by some as a strong public-facing leader with support within sections of the UDF, the party leadership is exploring alternative arrangements. Among the names being discussed in internal deliberations is senior Congress leader K C Venugopal, who is considered close to the central leadership.

According to party insiders, the Congress leadership is also considering a broader power-sharing structure to balance competing claims within the state unit. Another senior leader, Ramesh Chennithala, is reportedly being considered for an important institutional role such as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly if the party forms the government. However, these proposals have not been formally accepted by all stakeholders.

The disagreement has reportedly led to visible factional activity within the party in Kerala, with supporters of different leaders attempting to demonstrate influence. While the central leadership is said to prefer a consensus-driven approach, the competing ambitions have complicated the decision-making process. The issue has drawn comparisons to earlier leadership tensions in other states where similar internal rivalries delayed final announcements.

Party sources indicate that the Congress high command is closely monitoring the situation and has initiated consultations with senior state leaders to break the deadlock. A meeting involving key functionaries from the Kerala unit has reportedly been convened to explore possible compromises and avoid further escalation ahead of any potential government formation.

The leadership question also carries organisational and electoral implications, including concerns about by-elections and administrative continuity if certain leaders are assigned new roles. With the current Kerala Assembly term nearing its end, the Congress is under pressure to finalise a leadership structure that balances internal expectations with electoral strategy, while preventing further factional divisions within the state unit.
