US Says India Trade Deal Is A Priority, More Meetings Expected In Negotiations

US says India trade deal remains a priority with further meetings planned.

The United States has indicated that trade negotiations with India are in their final stages, with officials saying that an interim bilateral agreement could be concluded within weeks or months as both sides intensify high-level discussions to resolve outstanding issues. US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that trade remains a top priority for President Donald Trump’s administration and that further meetings between trade representatives are expected soon to finalise the agreement. He emphasised that Washington views a more “balanced trade relationship” with India as key to unlocking greater economic potential between the two countries.

Pigott said ongoing engagement between officials from both sides reflects strong momentum in the negotiations. He noted that cooperation and dialogue have been progressing steadily, with US Trade Representative teams expected to continue discussions in the near term to close remaining gaps in the proposed deal. He also highlighted the role of US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, crediting his outreach and engagement with Indian officials for strengthening bilateral ties. According to Pigott, the ambassador’s efforts reflect Washington’s broader commitment to deepening the strategic partnership with India across economic and geopolitical dimensions.

The comments come amid reports that India and the United States are nearing completion of a long-anticipated interim trade agreement. According to officials familiar with the process, negotiations have entered their final phase, with only a small number of unresolved issues remaining before a formal signing can take place. At a recent US-India TRUST Initiative event held at IIT Delhi, Gor said that both sides are working through the final stages of the agreement. He noted that Indian officials had recently visited Washington for talks, while a US delegation is expected to travel to India for further discussions, underscoring the accelerated pace of negotiations.

Gor also highlighted the rapid growth in bilateral economic ties, noting that trade in goods and services between the two countries has risen from around $20 billion to more than $220 billion over the past two decades. He described India as a key strategic partner for the United States, both economically and geopolitically. Officials on both sides have expressed optimism that continued engagement will lead to a breakthrough in the coming months, strengthening one of the most significant trade relationships in the global economy and reinforcing broader cooperation in technology, defence, and supply chains.
