US Envoy Sergio Gor Says India-US Potential "Goes Through Karnataka"

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Friday said the partnership between the United States and India had “limitless potential,” with Karnataka playing a central role in its expansion. Speaking at an exclusive preview of the exhibition “Quantum” at Science Gallery Bengaluru, Gor highlighted cooperation across artificial intelligence, data centres, pharmaceuticals, defence, energy and critical supply chains. He said more than 1,000 American companies were operating in Karnataka and that their presence continued to grow.

Gor said bilateral trade between India and the United States had increased from $20 billion a decade ago to more than $240 billion. He described trust as the foundation of the relationship, noting that India conducted more military exercises with the US than with any other country and supplied 40 per cent of generic pharmaceuticals used in America. He added that representatives of major companies, including Meta, Rolls-Royce and Netflix, had met him during the 24 hours preceding the event, reflecting growing American corporate interest in India.

The ambassador also discussed India’s inclusion in Pax Silica, a US-led international initiative launched in December 2025 to secure supply chains for artificial intelligence, semiconductors and critical minerals. Gor said one of his priorities after arriving in India was to bring the country into the initiative, adding that India was invited to be among its first 10 members. He stressed that advanced technologies could not operate without dependable access to essential components, magnets and critical minerals, making international supply-chain cooperation increasingly important.

Gor said India and the United States were working together across an unmatched range of sectors, from digital infrastructure and pharmaceuticals to defence sales. He also pointed to a 30 per cent year-on-year increase in bilateral energy cooperation. Declaring that the potential of the relationship “goes through Karnataka,” Gor congratulated Science Gallery Bengaluru and the state government for their work. He said the US Embassy in New Delhi and the US Consulate in Chennai were ready to deepen their engagement with Karnataka.

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the state was committed to creating a comprehensive quantum technology ecosystem involving the government, universities, scientists, innovators, startups and established companies. Referring to plans for a proposed Quantum City at Hesaraghatta, he said the project would provide research-grade laboratory infrastructure and extend technological development beyond Bengaluru. Shivakumar also sought deeper cooperation with the US in technology, research, defence and aerospace and renewed the state’s request for a full-fledged American consulate in Bengaluru.

Biocon Executive Chairperson and Science Gallery Bengaluru board chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said quantum science was reaching a critical stage in its development. She said the field, once largely confined to physicists, was rapidly becoming the foundation for future advances in computing, sensing, secure communications and scientific discovery. Mazumdar-Shaw said the “Quantum” exhibition was designed to make the emerging subject accessible to the public and announced a proposed Public Lab Complex that would bring researchers, engineers, technologists and industry representatives together for collaborative experimentation.
